Today the town of Thornaby is a thriving place, the old housing alongside the new. At it`s heart is the "New Town Centre" built in the 1960`s to replace the old shopping area in the streets around the town hall.

Thornaby Areodrome came into being in 1930, although the area had been used for flying since 1919. The Auxilliary airforce 608 Bomber squadron was formed at Thornaby on 17 March 1930, flying Wapitis. The areodrome finally closed in 1958 with most of the land being sold for redevelpment in 1963.

St. Patrick's RC Comprehensive is a popular, oversubscribed school for boys and girls aged 11 to 16 that largely serves the communities of Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick. It is a small school with 569 pupils on roll and an annual intake of four forms. Numbers have increased since the last inspection. The intake is drawn in the main from three local Catholic primary schools. There are almost equal numbers of boys and girls.

According to early records THORNABY FIRE BRIGADE was originally known as the South Stockton Fire Brigade whose Fire Station was in Chapel Street, where a horse drawn manual pump was kept. The horses, when required, were supplied by a nearby livery stable.

Then, in 1974, when the new Fire Station was built, the retained personnel were phased out and the Thornaby Fire Station became a Whole-time Station within Cleveland County Fire Brigade.

Thornaby is said to have come into its existence about 800 A.D.when the land was given by Halfdene, King of the Danes, to Thormod, one of his noblemen.

There are other signs of Thornaby being a much older or even prehistoric settlement.First of all, traces of prehistoric man have been found here, the earliest being a stone axe,8" long, dating back to the Mesolithic Period ( about 3000 B.C. ).In 1926 a dug out canoe said to date from about 1600 - 1400 B.C. was found in the mud under 8 feet of water opposite Thornaby High Wood.

An arrow head of the Neolithic Period (about 3000 B.C.) was found in a garden on the Thornaby Village Green.
